High-efficiency, low footprint power management unit for implants

The power management unit is developed to power the processor and analog parts of an implant. It provides multiple stable output supplies ranging from 1.1V to 3.3V using capacitive DCDC converters and low noise LDOs. The PMU can be powered by a single Zn-Air, Li-Ion or any battery in between. It provides high efficiencies comparable to inductive systems while having a smaller footprint.

FEATURES

  • Broad input voltage range: 0.9V – 4.2V
  • Up to 7 simultaneous different output levels
  • Two capacitive dual-cap closed loop DC-DC converters with programmable ratios, ranging from 1/3 up to 4
  • Programmable set-points for output voltages
  • On-chip power switch matrix for optimal configuration per battery type
  • Battery voltage monitoring / battery type detection
  • Output supplies monitoring
  • Start-up current limitation
  • 5 LDOs including very low noise LDOs for audio applications
  • 90nm CMOS technology
