Bert, Senior Project Leader

Bert was ICsense’s very first employee, starting his professional journey with us in 2005. He began as a Design Engineer and grew into the role of Senior Project Leader. Today, Bert dedicates most of his time to supporting the design team and shaping ASIC specifications. As part of our story from the very beginning, his continued presence reflects true loyalty and commitment. Outside of work, Bert enjoys football and even coaches the ICsense soccer team.

What is your current job focus ?

I’m currently involved in a medical application project. As project leader, I manage a wide range of tasks aimed at ensuring we meet our intermediate milestones and ultimately reach the tape-out target. Most of my time is dedicated to supporting the design team and developing the ASIC specification, I also handle the technical communication with the customer.

What is your typical workday like ?

My day usually begins with a cup of coffee, greeting my colleagues and checking for urgent messages. I typically have a long to-do list, but I also need to be ready to tackle ad-hoc issues as they arise. It can be challenging, but there’s a great sense of satisfaction each time a problem is successfully resolved.

Why did you choose ICsense?

When I graduated from university, I was looking for a job opportunity in or near Leuven. I preferred a small company – one where it wasn’t all about the money. Ideally, I wanted to contribute to making the world a better place or improving people’s lives. During the job interview, I immediately felt very welcome. Although the company was just starting out, it was clear that the founders were ambitious in a healthy way. Since the sensor business has a wide range of applications and ICsense focuses on ASICs that bridge the analog and digital worlds, it was clear there would be plenty of opportunities to grow.

What do you enjoy most about working with the ICsense team ?

Being part of the company from the early days—seeing it grow from 5 to over 100 employees—has been a unique experience. What I’ve appreciated most over the years is the open atmosphere and the flexibility. Whether you’re a new designer, a project manager or even the CEO, you can always knock on someone’s door for help or advice.
The company’s flexibility also stands out to me. We adapted quickly to the challenges of COVID-19, with a relaxed work-from-home policy that allows everyone to work from home based on their needs. When I was out for six weeks due to knee surgery, I felt fully supported—and a visit from my colleagues from my island was a great example of the positive work culture.
And then there are the many events that bring us together: team buildings, barbecues, tape-out receptions, workshops, men/women days, Easter chocolates and support for the soccer team or other initiatives.

How would you describe the ICsense company culture in one word - and why?

For me, it’s all about team spirit. Even though we now have many different teams—analog and digital design, layout, sales, test, product engineering, quality, HR, and more—we all work together. Everyone supports each other, and it leads to great results!
This was especially evident during the TDK soccer tournament. As someone who has long been a driving force behind the ICsense soccer team, it was a real pleasure to once again experience such strong team spirit combined with fair play.
